Early Childhood Education (ECE)
The Early Childhood Education Certificate equips students with essential skills and knowledge necessary for working effectively with young children and their families across various environments. Our program emphasizes a play-based approach, focusing on strengths and positive asset perspectives.
Practicums form a crucial part of the curriculum, offering students opportunities to integrate theory with practical experience in early childhood settings. Key areas of study encompass lifespan development; establishing relationships with children and families; curriculum development; behavior guidance; health, safety, and nutrition practices; theoretical frameworks, ethics, and philosophies; interpersonal and professional communication; observation and documentation techniques; as well as inclusive and diverse educational practices.
Upon completion, graduates are well-prepared for careers in childcare professions within group care and educational settings catering to children from birth to age 12. Potential employment opportunities include preschools, family childcare, BC Strong Start programs, infant development programs, supported child development initiatives, Child Care Resource and Referral services, Head Start programs, Community Action Program for Children, as well as roles in literacy, behavior, and early intervention programs.
Students also learn about the physical and mental well-being of children and the absence of disease.
Students will learn about the regulations and practices that protect the health and safety of young children in our community.
Students will explore how best to work in partnership with parents to protect the health and safety of their children.
